Helsinki in Florence, Florence in Helsinki

The book is a summary of the Helsinki in Florence, Florence in Helsinki photograph project which I made during the years 1998-2000. The book is also a piece of art in its own right.

Does the essence of a place become evident in a detail of a wall? Can it be transferred from one place to another with the help of a photograph poster? Does a photograph taken from a wall in Helsinki give a Helsinki atmosphere also in Florence and vice versa? How does the chosen medium help to transfer the atmosphere? Do a painting and a photograph have the same capacity to transfer the atmosphere? What is an original and what is a reproduction? Parallels can be drawn between photos and paintings. Sometimes it is difficult to distinguish a detail photo fragment of a wall from a modern painting.

The exhibition was sponsored by the City of Helsinki, the City of Florence, The Finnish Foreign ministry, The Finnish Embassy in Rome, the Finnish Association in Florence, FRAME and Finnish companies.
